AGAINST ALL EXPECTATION

This project was born in January, 1993, while I was making the discovery of the refugee camps in Croatia, 90% of them Moslem, during the course of an inquiry concerning the rape of Bosnian women.

Since then, those camps have become permanent, places where time stifles hope and the only reason to live is waiting…Waiting for a husband, a father, a son, a letter, a means of leaving for another country, or simply waiting for a meal.
Today, for the 300,000 forgotten displaced persons in the camps, whose identity is suddenly reduced to that of their religion, the future is a dream that has vanished
Absurdity is reached at Mostar-Est in Bosnia-Herzegovina where the survivors are refugees in their own city, entirely destroyed after 11 months under attack. I arrived the next day of a cease-fire still fragil.

Last avatar of the war, a huge camp of refugees coming from Krajinna  called Turanj. There, 30 000 civilians are surviving between Krajina and Croatia. Non registered by the HCR they have no identity and no existence, erased from the map and therefore completely trapped.

I have choosen to work far from the gaze of the media, in the corridors of pain, of oblivion and fear. I have sought to record the humanity that survives in spite of the hatred of the torturers where only the emptiness of the regards remains to haunt us.

Photographic project supported by the « Leonard di Vinci » grant.
(Ministry of Forein Affairs) From january 1993 to january 1995.
